Mink Schmink - Sweetie Pie Collection

Our new ring collection is made for fun! Choc-mint Swirls, Oreos and Pink Frosting Rings are just some of the new ring designs out now. Inspired by garden tea parties, you'll either feel like eating them (not recommended), or wearing them with a cheeky grin! And for the times you want to feel pretty, the collection has an array of colourful cherry blossom rings to make your outfit flirty and fun.

All of these rings are adjustable too - so one size fits all.

Why We Love Newtown - Part 2

As the weather starts to warm up and the Ugg boots are put away, the streets of Newtown have become buzzing with people. I have noticed lots more street art cropping up around the streets - it's a sign that the creative people of Newtown are loving the warmer temperatures.

Here's a little video of Newtown from Channel 9's Getaway - Enjoy! (p.s. the mink schmink boutique is only 50m walk down from the Leo Monk boutique featured in the video)

New Tatty Devine

For all the Tatty Devine fans out there - we have just received another shipment. Yippee!!

Tatty Devine's signature plectrum earrings are now in stock!! Calling all rock chics! I have them in the following colours:

If you're looking for an investment in jewellery art I have something special for you. The photos of these dinosaur necklaces just don't do the jewellery justice - they are exquisite. Each bone has been individually cut and threaded onto this necklace (that's a lot of bones). I can guarantee you won't find any other designer making jewellery art like this.

Available in black and gold.

Stainless Steel Jewellery

It's been busy at mink schmink. I know it's been a while since my last post - but it is with good reason. We've been sourcing some fantastic new jewellery for you all!

We now have a range of stainless steel jewellery - Rings, Bracelets and Necklaces - for Men and Women. Yes, I know, it's taken me a while, but there is finally more jewellery for the men out there.

Featuring clean modern lines, high quality black rubber, metallic tones and value for money, this range will have you drooling (they make great gifts too). I have plenty of ring sizes too, so I welcome you to try a few rings on for size! :-)

I'll try and post some photos up of our new range soon - in the mean time, be sure to drop by and say hi!

Why We Love Newtown - Part 1

Newtown - There's a lot to like about this part of Sydney. Depending on who you talk to, I'm sure you will hear both positives and negatives, but hey, you could say that about anywhere.

If you aren't from the area (welcome to my international and interstate readers), and you plan on visiting Sydney, I highly recommend paying a visit to Newtown. It's about 4km from the City and easy to get to by bus or train (driving is an option but Newtown is also known for traffic jams).

You will need a whole day (or two) to see everything - you don't want to rush. Oh, you will also need some good walking shoes, an open mind, and a love of shopping and food.

King Street is Newtown's main street and features a melting pot of cultures, where almost anything goes. You'll find lots of specialty stores, and when I say specialty, I mean 'specialty'. A lot of the stores focus on getting in things that are a little different (I think that is part of the allure of Newtown).

There's a mix of the old and new (and funnily enough that describes the architecture of Newtown), with retro furniture stores, gift stores, fashion (vintage and cutting edge) as well as the mink schmink boutique of course. Shopaholics be warned, Newtown is shopping heaven.

And if you're hungry and thirsty, there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars to satisfy - you won't be short on choice. For intstance in the South end of King St you can pick between Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, Korean, Lebanese and even go for Teppanyaki (and that's only a fraction of what you choose from). Foodies, you can delight your tastebuds all day in Newtown - seriously.

Ok, so I've only mentioned a little of what Newtown has to offer. There is plenty to come - I will try and get some photos for you all in the next installment.

Tatty Devine 'Best Of... Collection' Now In Store

These have to be seen to be believed - the photos just don't do them justice. My shipment from the designer jewellery label Tatty Devine is here and I have to say, that the ladies at Tatty Devine are brilliant. Not only are their designs original, they have put a lot of time and effort into their label and it shows. Even the necklaces have the signature 'Tatty Devine' plectrum on the chain.

Who says that jewellery has to be formal all the time? I think that a lot of people are opening up to the use of different materials in jewellery. And with so many of us wanting to change our looks and have fun with jewellery, cost is also a factor.

A trend that has been growing steadily in the past few years is the use of crystal glass, acrylic and resin, mixed in with precious metals like sterling silver and gold. While the materials aren't as costly, designers can be more creative while making a design with great quality. The rules are changing (thankfully) and I think we'll see a lot more of this for a while yet.

Here are my favourites from the Tatty Devine collection:

'Pegasus' earrings in black or mirror finish

Triple 'Crisps' Necklace (cast from real chippies) - Notice the 'Tatty Devine' imprinted on the Crisp? How's that for attention to detail?!

Lucy Lui & the Fashion Olympics

The Beijing Olympics start in less than a week and the eyes of the world will be focused on China. It just wouldn't be right unless the fashion world took part, so here's a taste of what Harper's Bazaar came up with; a tongue in-cheek fashion spread with Lucy Lui in the Fashion Olympics. Go Lucy!

Fashion Predictions from the 1930s

Now here's an interesting blast from the past.

Take a look at this fashion prediction from the 1930s and you'll notice a lot of these predictions have come true to some degree. While the hair and makeup are still very 1930s, the concepts have already been seen on the catwalk (not to mention a few red carpet appearances at the Academy Awards - think Halle Berry in that Elie Saab Gown in 2002).

I especially like their prediction for the man of the 21st century. Enjoy!

Trend Alert - Adjustable Sterling Silver Rings

This is for all the ladies out there that have thought "If only they had my size..." - I hear you loud and clear!

With more and more designers hearing the call of the masses, adjustable rings have evolved with the use of new materials and quality designs. Oh no, adjustable rings are no longer for kids - Although I suspect you will feel as happy a kid in a lolly store when try these rings on for size(haha.. ahem... where was I?).

Back to the rings... To satisfy all the ring lovers out there, Mink Schmink are pleased to be presenting Avalon Silver's range of adjustable rings. Handcrafted from quality Sterling Silver, their adjustable bands are designed so that they don't pinch your fingers - it also looks like a normal ring when you put it on (I know, I know, that sounds impossible, but really you have to see them to understand - it's quite clever).

These 3 are just a few examples of the designs we have but as you can see, they could easily lift any outfit from drab to fab. Gotta love it!

Bella Bead Bracelets!

Wow, these bracelets are just gorgeous! The pictures just don't do them justice, so if you get a chance to pop in the store, try one on! This style of bracelet has been gainng in popularity over the years and there are several companies now producing them in as many colours and variations as you can think of.

Our Bella bracelets have a lovely toggle clasp and a mixture of lampwork beads and silver plated spacers. We have 6 different colourways: Aqua, Pink, Green, Pastels, Black and White, and Black and Gold.

At $42.50 each they are an affordable alternative to their high end sterling silver and gold counterparts, where the beads are bought separately from the chain (You can pay around $20+ for just one bead in some stores, so this is one bargain you don't want to miss).

These bracelets are moving fast - get in quick.

Ugg Boots - An Aussie Classic

With the winter months now in full swing here in Sydney, I thought it was only fitting that did a post on the classic Aussie staple, Ugg boots (otherwise known as sheepskin boots).

It isn't a winter in Australia without them. In fact, as I sit here in front of the heater, I have my Uggies on. I suppose it's that instant comfort you get from putting them on after a long day at work, or the warmth they provide on a chilly morning - either way, I think I will always own a pair.

Despite a bit of controversy over the name, I think it's amazing just how long they have endured and increased in popularity. Once the stereotypical footwear for westies (probably because it gets so clod out that way), Ugg boots are made by so many labels now, and in so many styles and colours that everyone has them. Google it and you'll see what I mean.

I came across this very 80's, and very Aussie commercial for Skinnys Sheepskin boots - I don't think the styles have changed that much, do you?

New In Store - Metal Stamping Jewellery

While metallics are proving to be popular for yet another season, we are seeing some lovely designs come out, using metals in different ways. Metal stampings are being used to create some lovely pieces, such as in the necklace above.

These animal necklaces are made with the same technique and as you can see, you can get a really good level of detail in the design.

Not only do they make for interesting jewellery, it's lightweight too, so you can wear it comfortably. Be on the look-out for metal stamping earrings too - they are lighter than normal earrings (meaning you can look fabulous without having sore ear lobes).

Ahoy There! Nautical Jewellery

White Anchor Earrings

Aren't these earrings fun!

These nautical inspired hook earrings will add some colour and fun to your jewellery collection.

Dress them up with preppy-style wool jumpers and crisp shirts, or make them casual with a t-shirt and jeans - they are easy to match with many outfits so you're only limited by your imagination.

Silver and gold are always a good to match with any outfit and occassion. Pair up some slick earrings with a pair of jeans for instant sophistication. Here are some new styles in-store at mink schmink that fit the bill perfectly.
